Overview
The ESP32 is one of the most widely used cores for connected products because it puts Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy, and a capable dual-core processor on a single module, at a price point that makes sense for consumer and industrial IoT alike. Getting a reliable product out of it comes down to three things: choosing the right connectivity mode, interfacing sensors cleanly, and managing power so the device behaves predictably in the field.
Connectivity Options
Wi-Fi suits products that stay within range of a router and need higher bandwidth — dashboards, cloud logging, OTA firmware updates. BLE is the better fit for phone-paired devices and short-range sensor broadcasting where battery life matters more than throughput. Many designs use both: BLE for local pairing and configuration, Wi-Fi for ongoing cloud connectivity. Deciding this early shapes the rest of the firmware architecture, so it's worth settling before schematic capture rather than after.
Sensor Integration and Power Design
ESP32's I2C, SPI, and ADC peripherals cover most common sensors, but two details matter more than the interface choice: keeping analog sensor traces away from the radio and switching regulator, and giving the power supply enough headroom for the current spikes that occur during Wi-Fi transmission. Underestimating that transient current draw is one of the most common causes of brownouts and unexplained resets in ESP32-based products.
Firmware Reliability
Deep sleep and wake scheduling determine battery life far more than any single hardware choice. Firmware should also handle watchdog timers, reconnect logic for dropped Wi-Fi, and safe OTA update rollback — the difference between a demo and a shippable product is almost always in how gracefully the firmware handles the cases where connectivity or power isn't perfect.
How PAK-EL LAB Can Help
PAK-EL LAB designs ESP32-based hardware and firmware for IoT products end to end — PCB layout, sensor interfacing, power design, and connectivity architecture. If you're planning a connected product, our team can help scope the right approach before development starts.
